November Featured Artist – Scot Dolby

When November arrives, days fly by with seasonal activities and special family times filling our schedules. The colors of fall seem to set the stage for Thanksgiving and make this truly the prettiest time of year. This gives us time to pause and enjoy what the Eastern Shore has to offer before the Christmas holidays take hold.

Our featured artist for November is a familiar name at Bishop’s Stock. Scot Dolby has been showing with us for most of our 21 years. Once he retired from teaching and dedicated himself to more studio time (when not fishing), Scot had his first featured show in 2008. After that he was our November artist in most even numbered years until Covid interrupted everyone’s schedule. We always have his work moving around the gallery but this time he is showing over 20 new paintings. He has titled the show Stay in the Struggle: 70 years of marking marks. My comment to him is “he still stays in the lines”! The show features what he does best – bringing the local landscape into view. Yes, there are fish, two beautiful dyptichs, one classic f-150 and a new selection of everyones’ favorites, his cigar box top mixed media paintings.

March Featured Artists – Maureen Farrell & Karen Kinser

Our March show welcomes true spring with the art of two very talented women. The show, titled Drawing from Within, has Maureen Farrell returning and introduces Karen Kinser. As you can see from the work shown on their websites – Maureen Farrell and Karen Kinser – both address what they feel with their contemporary paintings. Maureen shares her emotions with her figurative acrylic paintings which start with journaling and sketching. Karen takes a similar approach to her drawing and oil paintings by incorporating her background in graphic design. Her primary interest is color. Both artists let their emotions drive what they paint. Maureen uses a process and Karen uses color and shapes. All of the paintings are in albums on our Facebook page. Below is a selection of some of the paintings in the show.

May Featured Artists – Lynn Mehta & Alison Leigh Menke

To celebrate the success of plein air painting during 15 years of Paint Snow Hill, May’s featured artists are Lynn Mehta and Alison Menke, two talented artists who discovered Snow Hill and likewise, Bishop’s Stock discovered their talent. Lynn and Alison are both active members of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and participate in events and teach workshops and private classes. Lynn began exhibiting and competing as a full-time professional in 2008 and has received numerous honors and awards. Lynn’s website shows her accomplishments and her work. Alison graduated from the University of Maryland in 2010 and began her journey into landscape painting in 2011 when a three week solitary trip to Colorado turned into a five month foray into plein air and she has not stopped since. Check her website to find out more about her travels and honors

Paint Snow Hill 2018

Over 70 artists from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region will be in and around Snow Hill for the 15th Paint Snow Hill. This is a 3 day, non-competitive plein air event that brings experienced and novice artists. There are no scheduled events so spectators have become familiar with areas that are popular for painting and will look for easels at boat landings, farm lanes and around Snow Hill. On Saturday, April 21, the work created during the event will be shown and offered for sale at a preview showing. There is a $30 fee that is applied to the purchase of a painting. On Sunday the show and sale continue from noon to 4 with no fee.

Opening Reception for Winter Abstracts

To spark creative energy Bishop’s Stock features abstract work each February. The show is simply called Winter Abstracts but it brings great energy to the gallery space. Come shake those winter blues by meeting the featured artists and tasting our February wines.

December Featured Artist – Stan Sperlak

Marshes and beaches along the Atlantic coast consistently appear in Stan’s pastels. In this show he uses both brilliant and tonal saturated color for both plein air and studio paintings. Stan captures the pureness of nature’s color values by layering intensely pigmented pastels. He achieves texture from both the paper he selects and the way he uses the pastels. You see movement of the wind in short energetic strokes. Tranquility of the ocean you see in long horizontal bands of color. The atmospheric relationship between land or sea and sky is predominant in all of Stan’s work. Undoubtedly, Stan’s pastels clearly represent his emotional connection to the beauty of this region. Everyday Stan lives his love of the outdoors through his painting, a busy landscape business in Cape May Court House, NJ and life on Crow Creek Farm. As a master teacher, Stan shares his artistic vision and skills in workshops all over the world.
