Celebrating 10th Anniversary Featuring Stan Sperlak

Bishop’s Stock is turning “10” in November! To celebrate we are showing new work by Stan Sperlak. Stan is one of the amazing artists we have come to know and represent through the gallery since 2003. I met him during the first Paint Snow Hill and from then on he has made the trip from Cape May Court House many times bringing us his pastels full of intense color and beautiful light. Since his last show Stan has completed his dream of having a beautiful space for workshops and special events. Crow Creek Farm ties farmland, forest and marsh into an inspirational setting for Stan, his students and his friends. New Work by Angela-Herbert-Hodges

Angela Herbert-Hodges works in watercolor and mixed media with a range of subjects from personal interaction to things encountered in everyday life. She does representational as well as abstract paintings which appear to evolve as she creates them. This show includes larger “conversational” pieces as well as small mixed media collages illustrating the varied ways she mixes watercolor, gouache, and found objects. Her work shows a full range of her use of texture, color and mixed media. On October 19 & 20 Angela will teach a 2-day workshop on collage while she is Bishop’s Stock’s October Artist-in-Residence.

New Work by Fred Sprock Featured in September

New Work by Fred Sprock

Fred Sprock moved to Snow Hill a year ago after spending most of his life in his native Charlotte NC. He began painting, taking oil lessons from Andy Braitman at Braitman Studio in Charlotte. His work has evolved from tight representational to a looser, more painterly style. He attributes this to increasing his use of painting knives which often results in less control, leaving it to the viewer to decide “Is that a house, a church, or maybe a shed in the distance? Before moving to Snow Hill, while teaching classes at Braitman Studio, Fred would say, “If you do this, this will happen.” He realized, for him, this bridged the difference between a painter and an artist. Over time, the painter acquires a set of technical skills that enables one to render a strong likeness of the subject matter. The artist abandons that knowledge base and asks, “If I do this, what will happen?” Now that he is finding inspiration on the Eastern Shore, Fred is trying to become an artist – not just a painter. His work is included in the Duke Energy; Womble Carlyle; and Stiles,Byrum and Horne, LLP corporate collections. This is his first featured show at Bishop’s Stock.

3 Generations Featured in August

3 Generations

Barbara Beauchamp and Lois Engberg are unique among Bishop’s Stock’s artists since they share incredible talent as mother and daughter. It is no surprise to have this same talent emerging in the next generation. We are so pleased to have Katie Engberg, Lois’ daughter join her grandmother and mother in presenting 3 Generations as our August show.

Katie is about to return for her second year at the Water Street Atelier, the Grand Central Academy’s full-time program in New York. This program is limited to 15 students who devote themselves to learning traditional drawing, painting and sculpture from life. These studies ensure a deep understanding of classical form, design, practice, and discipline. Included in the show is the final cast drawing. For this Katie received a merit-based scholarship to help cover her tuition. As she pursues her education, Barbara and Lois continue to attend workshops in addition to teaching painting classes twice a week.

Jim Rehak Featured

Plein Air Seascapes by Jim Rehak Featured in June

Jim Rehak has been showing with Bishop’s Stock since we opened on 2003. We show his work regularly but this is his second featured exhibit. Jim, a 10 year veteran of Paint Snow Hill, is almost exclusively a plein air painter. His palette is very bold and colorful. This show includes new paintings with a focus on seascapes along the coast. He has captured the changing sky and seasonal colors in the dunes and water. Jim is also a caricature artist known to summer visitors. The opening reception for Jim’s show is Friday, June 7 from 5-8. The work will be exhibited until July 2.

Paint Snow Hill & Deborah Rolig

Bishop’s Stock is pleased to offer new work by Deborah Rolig and a selection of paintings from April’s 2013 Paint Snow Hill. Rolig has been May’s featured artist for 6 years. Her studio time was interrupted by her husband’s illness. She is now returning to the gallery with a limited amount of new work. We are thrilled to have her back in her studio and are very pleased to show what she has been doing.

April’s Paint Snow Hill 2013 was a great success with 70 artists creating over 300 paintings. The gallery will be showing a selection of that work by 15 artists. This is plein air painting at it’s best. The painting shown is by Diane Hurwitz-Specht. It was awarded the 10th Anniversary Award judged by Christie Taylor, Hodges-Taylor Art Consultancy, Charlotte, NC. If you missed the “wet paint” show and the chance to see the work created a 3 day period this exhibit will give an idea of the wonderful diversity the participating artists bring to Paint Snow Hill.

Lynne Lockhart & Kirk McBride Featured in April

New Work by Lynne Lockhart & Kirk McBride Featured in April

Bishop’s Stock will open the spring season with the annual exhibit of new work by Lynne Lockhart and Kirk McBride, two of the area’s most recognized artists. The upcoming show includes studies and studio paintings by both artists. Lockhart has included classic small animal and bird studies in the show. McBride’s work includes a series of harbor boats from up and down the East Coast and iconic trucks from a trip to Sedona.

Lockhart is known for her images of animals in their natural surroundings as well as her animal portraits. She is an adventurous painter whose style ranges from surreal and illustrative to semi-impressionistic. Her work has an expressive quality of simplicity and freshness with great balance between light and realism. She “reads” her subjects capturing them in their natural environment as well as in imaginary situations.

McBride is constantly looking for moments to inspire his oil paintings. His work is inspired by his daily experiences and his travels. McBride is known for using light and shadow to create a unifying theme in his paintings. He successfully creates a mood and a sense of time and place whether the subjects are seascapes or mountains, city scenes or interior spaces.

Both artists will be participating for the tenth year in Paint Snow Hill April 19-21. McBride will be teaching a plein air workshop April 17 & 18.

Exhibit of Work by Gallery Artists

Once a year Bishop’s Stock likes to focus on the diverse talents of the gallery’s artists. It seemed timely to welcome spring with this show in March. Among the artists showing are John Cleary, Denise Dumont, Scot Dolby, Helene English, Lynne Lockhart, Kirk McBride, Carole Boggemann Pierson, Jim Rehak, Stan Sperlak and Nancy West. This exhibit mixes representational and contemporary work in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor and mixed media. The show opens on March 1 and closes April 2. Artist of the Month Scot Dolby

This month Bishop’s Stock will be featuring one of our very first artists we represented in 2003, Scot Dolby. It seems perfect to have Scot’s work as show 101 as we move into year 10. Scot is known for his tonal palette and linear compositions. This particular selection of paintings includes Eastern Shore architectural icons and landscapes. Scot’s love of fly fishing also is also showing in this work. Those familiar with his mixed media presentations painted on cigar box tops will enjoy seeing some new work as well. This is Scot’s 3rd show with us. His work is always in our inventory.

Artist of the Month Ann Hayden

Ann Hayden

In 2009, Ann Hayden waved goodbye to midtown Manhattan and a creative director career in advertising, to paint full time on Virginia’s eastern shore. As featured artist at Bishop’s Stock for October, Ann’s new work, a collection named Flyby, focuses on birds in flight.
“Lately, I’m caught up with the sculptural quality of the birds I see around our house. Osprey, heron, gulls…as well as enormous flocks of geese, blackbirds, etc. They can be so sleek, other times so heavy. Their shapes are endlessly fun to paint, full of curves and surprises.”

Ann grew up in Buffalo, New York, where the nearby Albright Knox Art Gallery was full of American abstract art. Experiences of running through that gallery as a kid, with huge Klein’s and Motherwell’s and Clifford Stills, are creeping into her painting, especially evident in the use of black, strong colors, and plenty of open air.

This will be her Ann’s fifth featured show since 2009, and her debut at Bishop’s Stock.
