2012 Henry Fessy Sous la Roche Pouilly Fuisse from Southern Burgundy. Pouilly Fuisse is exclusively Chardonnay. The pruned and trained vines on the Fessey vineyards are 33 years old. The grapes produce a full-bodied and elegant wine. This Pouilly-Fuissé has beautiful pale green highlights. The bouquet reveals aromas of pear, followed by delicate notes of almond. This is a great wine for oyster stew or a simple fish or chicken dish.

2009 Petite Sirene Bordeaux, Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, France                     $12

This is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux production has been hailed as  great vintages – worth buying and enjoying now in 2014. This wine can be decanted to enhance the nose cherry, black currant and buttered toast nose. It is a dark ruby red baked black cherry and plum flavors wrapped around traces of toasted bread crust. Although a medium bodied wine there is a nice spicy finish. All in all this is a lovely velvety, easy drinking wine which may be enjoyed alone or with any meal that needs a red wine.

For those who appreciate local talent this means a great selection of oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. Most work is unframed but there is a small selection of paintings ready to hang plus frames to purchase. This year ceramics and jewelry are included. The sale continues through December and January so there is plenty of time to leisurely search for that perfect find. During this time newer work by gallery artists is also displayed but not at reduced prices.

Wines of the Month – 2012 Quady Essensia Orange Muscat, California & NVTrentadue Chocolate Amore, CaliforniaCalifornia

label on Quady Essensia Orange Muscat 2012 Quady Essensia Orange Muscat, California        $17

To celebrate the holiday season Bishop’s Stock has selected dessert wines as our features. Essensia  may accompany dessert or be a dessert on its own. It  is made from 100% Orange Muscat, a grape variety that is little known. Essensia has an aroma reminiscent of orange blossom and apricot.  The wine is lightly fortified to about 15% alcohol and aged for 3 months in French Oak. On the palate Essensia tastes like fresh fruit with a nice balance. This is a great pairing for chocolate and desserts with almonds, peaches, apples or apricots. Add to sparkling wine to make Essensia Royale. Alcohol: 15%

NV Trentadue Chocolate Amore, California            $22

This is a Merlot-based, port-styled chocolate flavored dessert wine.  Using traditions for port making, neutral grape spirits are used to stop fermentation to trap a percentage of sugar in the wine. Once Chocolate Amore is finished aging and is ready for bottling and a tiny amount of natural chocolate extract is infused to the final blend. This creates the perfect marriage to pair with something as simple as vanilla ice cream or as a stand-alone dessert. Alcohol: 18.5%

Wines of the Month – 2012 Angeline Sauvignon Blanc & 2011 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir

label on Angeline Sauvignon Blanc

2012 Angeline Sauvignon Blanc, Russina River Valley, California $13

Angeline 2012 Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc is produced from three different Russian River Valley vineyards: Dempel, Herrick and Ricioli. The Russian River Valley is known for a coastal influence that often brings fog to the area. One vineyard is located in a slightly warmer part of the appellation which offers rich, ripe fruit character. The other vineyard is in a cooler area which brings nice acidity and a really intense varietal character to the wine. Angeline has a track record for producing savory, delicious Sauvignon Blanc at an inexpensive price. The wine is dry, but rich in honey, papaya and gooseberry flavors, brightened by brisk acidity. This wine received 89 points from Wine Enthusiast. We paired this with halibut baked with light garlic cream for a delicious combination. Alcohol: 13.9%

label for Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir 2011 featured at Bishop's Stock

2011 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir, Edna Valley, California  $22

This is a story about how a family’s involvement in the wine industry  has grown over the years. Jack Nivens founded Paragon Vineyard, the family wine business,  in the 1970’s in the Edna Valley.  His wife Catharine caught the bug from him, and planted a few acres in their front yard. Her project grew into what is now Baileyana Winery. Her sons bought more acreage for their Firepeak Vineyard. The wine being featured is a perfect example of  Grand Firepeak Cuvee.  This is a medium-bodied Pinot Noir with  loads of flavor with aromas of dark chocolate, raspberry, dark cherry, blueberry, root beer and a touch of anise following straight through to the palate. Hints of white pepper and spice round it out nicely. The finish is long and filled with bright red fruits. The yield for this 2011 vintage was light  but the rich quality of the grapes make this a lovely wine.  This is a great holiday wine since it pairs with everything – turkey, salmon, pork. Alcohol: 14.5%

Wines of the Month – 2012 Domaine Pichot Vouvray, Loire Valley & 2011 Terrassess du Frigoulet, Languedoc-Roussillon

Featured Wines for October – 2012 Domaine Pichot Vouvray, Loire Valley & 2011 Terrasses du Frigoulet, Languedoc-Rousillon

label on Pichot Vouvray

2012 Domaine Pichot Vouvray, Loire Valley  $17

Vouvray wines are unique and have quite unparalleled qualities. In fact, very few appellations in the world are made from a single, quite rare grape variety as is the case here with the Chenin Blanc grape also referred to as Pineau de la Loire. This 2012 Vouvray is known as Le Peu de la Moriette. This is a  semi-dry wine with perfect balance between dry and sweet which makes this a perfect choice for seafood or poultry prepared with creamy or citrus sauces. It combines freshness and roundness on the palate so it works well as a appertif then carries all the way through a meal. Expect prices on Vouvray to rise due to summer storm damage in the region. Hail storms destroyed this year’s grapes and did a great deal of damage to vines.

label on 2011 red blend Terrasses du Frigoulet featured at Bishop's Stock

2011 Terrasses du Frigoulet, Languedoc-Rousillon   $11

Terrasses du Frigoulet is a blend made from hand harvested, de-stemmed fruit. The blend for the 2011 vintage is 35% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre from 100% estate bottled fruit.  Wine Spectator gave this wine a 90 and describes it as a big  powerful red with concentrated mulberry, dark plum, blackberry and baked cherry flavors. The finish offers a taste of chocolate. This is a “country style” wine that is great with stews, hearty soups and roasted meats.

New Work by Fred Sprock Featured in September

         New Work by Fred Sprock

Fred Sprock moved to Snow Hill a year ago after spending most of his life in his native Charlotte NC. He began painting, taking oil lessons from Andy Braitman at Braitman Studio in Charlotte. His work has evolved from tight representational to a looser, more painterly style. He attributes this to increasing his use of painting knives which often results in less control, leaving it to the viewer to decide “Is that a house, a church, or maybe a shed in the distance? Before moving to Snow Hill, while teaching classes at Braitman Studio, Fred would say, “If you do this, this will happen.” He realized, for him, this bridged the difference between a painter and an artist. Over time, the painter acquires a set of technical skills that enables one to render a strong likeness of the subject matter. The artist abandons that knowledge base and asks, “If I do this, what will happen?” Now that he is finding inspiration on the Eastern Shore, Fred is trying to become an artist – not just a painter. His work is included in the Duke Energy; Womble Carlyle; and Stiles,Byrum and Horne, LLP corporate collections. This is his first featured show at Bishop’s Stock.

Featured Wines for September – 2011 Purato Catarratto/Pinot Grigio, Sicily & 2011 Le Salette Valpolicella Classico, Veneto, Italy

Label for Purato Catarratto Pinot Grigio wine2011 Purato Catarratto/Pinot Grigio IGT, Sicily                                    $12

Purato Catarratto-Pinot Grigio IGT 2011 has 60% Catarratto which gives more body to the 40% Pinot Grigio. The blending of these two grapes creates an enjoyable, everyday drinking wine that offers intense aromas of both citrus, tropical fruit flavors and a hint of dried herbs. The palate is beautifully weighted with fine texture, balanced acidity and a lingering dry finish. This is perfect with seafood or as an aperitif. The packaging of this wine is interesting since the bottle is 85% recycled glass and the labels are recycled paper with vegetable ink. Even the wine cases are made with recycled cardboard. Alcohol: 13%

label for Le Salette Valpolicella wine from Veneto

2011 LeSalette Valpolicella Classico DOC, Veneto, Italy       $17

After decades of less than stellar wines Valpolicella has come back with more refined vintages. The color of this wine is a dark red ruby with garnet highlights. The bouquet is intense and full of dry fruit and spices. The palate is soft and balanced with a long finish very much like a Beaujolais. This is a great wine to pair with end of summer steaks on the grill. Alcohol: 12.5%

3 Generations Featured in August

painting of woman by Katie EngbergPainting of pears by Lois Engberg Painting of hydrangeas and brass pot by Barbara Beauchamp

                          3 Generations

Barbara Beauchamp and Lois Engberg are unique among Bishop’s Stock’s artists since they share incredible talent as mother and daughter. It is no surprise to have this same talent emerging in the next generation. We are so pleased to have Katie Engberg, Lois’ daughter join her grandmother and mother in presenting 3 Generations as our August show.

Katie is about to return for her second year at the Water Street Atelier, the Grand Central Academy’s full-time program in New York. This program is limited to 15 students who devote themselves to learning traditional drawing, painting and sculpture from life. These studies ensure a deep understanding of classical form, design, practice, and discipline. Included in the show is the final cast drawing.  For this Katie received a merit-based scholarship to help cover her tuition. As she pursues her education, Barbara and Lois continue to attend workshops in addition to teaching painting classes twice a week.
