Wines of the Month – 2013 Santa Carolina Chardonnay & 2011 Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile

Santa Carolina Chardonnay

2013 Santa Carolina Chardonnay Reserva, Casablanca Valley, Chile          $11

Santa Carolina Chardonnay Reserva has a bright gold/yellow color. It features an intense combination of fruity aromas of pear, figs, pineapple and bananas. On the palate, this fruity, fresh and well-balanced wine features ripe tropical fruit and a soft, mild buttery texture, with hints of vanilla and toffee. This wine is aged in oak but the effect is pleasant to make this a well-balanced, medium to full bodied wine. It is a great wine to serve with scallops, salmon, a seafood bisque or leftover turkey! Alcohol: 13.5%

Santa Carolina Cabernet Saauvignon

2011 Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Valle del Maipo, Chile      $20

This Cabernet Sauvignon has a bright vivid ruby red color. It features ripe cherry and black currant with chocolate and pepper aromas, enhanced by sweet spices, vanilla and cinnamon notes. On the palate, this dry and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon offers a perfect balance between fruit and oak, ripe and soft tannins and a lingering finish. Wine Enthusiast  gives this 91 and says “This Cabernet delivers a complete package at an incredibly attractive price. Aromas of mocha, graphite and vanilla play nicely with core berry scents. Baked berry, vanilla and pastry flavors settle softly, with mellow tannins. Drink through 2018.” This is a perfect smooth and supple wine for richly roasted beef and lamb. Alcohol: 14.5%

Hunter Nesbitt Featured in October

Oil 20x16 by Hunter NEsbitt

Abstractions from Nature by Hunter Nesbitt

When we opened the gallery in November 2003 we met new artists when they stopped by to see our space and our gallery approach. Hunter Nesbitt was an early visitor for whom we planned a show in June 2004. At that time Nesbitt was focused on abstracted representations of marsh grasses in winter and wave patterns in water and clouds all done in pastel on heavy archival paper. After reconnecting with Nesbitt this year we decided to show his latest work – Abstractions from Nature – that includes pastels but also oils on canvas. Nesbitt’s work continues to be subtle, minimal and serene.

Wines of the Month – 2013 Wildewood Wine Company Pinot Gris & 2010 Wildewood Wine Company Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Wildewood Wine Company Pinot Gris

2013 Wildewood Wine Company, Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon                 $19

2013 Wildewood Pinot Gris is a classic white varietal grown in the Willamette Valley because of the mineral soils and cool climate. The wine has aromas of ripe juicy pear and kiwi plus hints of lemon zest. With fresh acidity, this wine has good texture and a nice feel on the palate. This is a medium bodied wine that is a great pairing for a wide variety of seafood – grilled or spicy – and poultry or pork. Alcohol: 13.4%

Wildewood Wine Company Pinot Noir2010 Wildewood Wine Company, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon                  $19

2010 Wildewood Pinot Noir comes from a low yielding, late harvest. This resulted in a vintage of exceptional quality. In 2013 Wine Spectator gave this wine a 94. Montalieu jumped right in with this great vintage. This wine is defined by cherry, strawberry and rhubarb notes. There are hints of cinnamon and oregano. The bright fruits are balanced by slightly earthy notes. Pinot lovers will find this is an outstanding wine from a winemaker and region known for great quality. Think duck, lamb, pork and add some spices such as ginger or oregano and you will have a lovely pairing. Alcohol: 13.6%

Ann Hayden Featured in September

Prom King 40x30 oil on canvas by Ann HaydenI'm Starving, Where is That Bitch 30x40 oil on canvas by Ann HaydenI Have Seen the Moment of My Greatness Flutter 28x2 oil on canvas by Ann Hayden

“Hey, You Looking at Me?”

Ann Hayden has titled her second show with us in tribute to the curiosity she observes in the birds she watches near her home on the Eastern Shore of Virgina. While her first show “Flyby” caught birds in flight, this show captures their inquisitive nature. Once again she focuses on the sculptural quality of birds but this time her subjects seem to be posing for the observer. It is clear Ann finds the shapes fun to paint offering great poses and humor with titles contributed by her friend Phyllis Ward.

Wines of the Month – 2013 Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose & 2012 Tapada de Villar Tinto/Red, Portugal

Conde Villar Rose2013 Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose, Portugal  $11

This rose has been selected for September as a salute to the last days of summer. This wine is a bright raspberry color. It is made from Espadeiro grapes that are hand picked and immediately crushed to capture fresh aromas. Even with the light fizz characteristic of Vinho Verdes, this wine is smooth and creamy. As with all Vinho Verdes, this wine needs to be enjoyed within 2 years of bottling. That time is now! Try it as an aperitif or with grilled fish or a salad. Alcohol: 11.5%

Tapada de Villar2012 Tapada de Villar Tinto/Red, Portugal $13

Our red selection for September is 2012 Tapada de Villar Tinto/Red from the Alentejo region. This very dark ruby wine is made from 4 grapes – Alicante Bouschet, Tourga Nacional, Aragonez and Trincadbra – harvested at night to avoid high temperatures. The nose of the wine is rich with spices and dark fruit. This full-bodied red offers pronounced notes of red berries, dark stone fruit and hints of earth. The tannins are very soft. No rush to enjoy this wine but it is a great pairing for summer’s grilled meats and sausages. Alcohol: 14%

Wines of the Month – 2013 Chateau de la Chesnaie Muscadet Sevre et Maine, Loire Valley, 2009 Chateau Tour d’Auron, Bourdeaux

Muscadet

2013 Chateau de la Chesnaie Muscadet Sevre et Maine, Pomerol, Loire Valley               $12

This long name actually places the wine in an appellation in the Loire Valley. The grape is Melon de Bourgogne and it produces a pale silver wine with a slightly yellow tint, and aromas of grapefruit, lemon oil, cut hay and flowers. The palate was very citrusy and dry, with high toned acidity and mineral tones prevailing over fruit. This is a wonderful wine for summer seafood. Alcohol: 12%

Chateau Tour d'Auron2009 Chateau Tour d’Auron, Bordeaux        $12

This wine has been on our shelves for a year and we have customers who buy it regularly. The 2009 vintage is truly one in which a Bordeaux Supérieur like Château Tour d’Auron shines. It is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet SAuvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The fruit is luscious, the palate is seductive, and the finish is ripe but elegant. It is medium to full-bodied with structured tannins. If you want an easy red for grilled summer menus, this works.  Alcohol: 13%

Those who have seen her paintings during Paint Snow Hill will recognize her love of light and color. She is calling her show “Images of Summer Light” with all of the paintings reflecting light we experience during long, lazy summer days.

Wines of the Month – 2012 Damilano Langhe Arneis and 2011 Tommasi Rompicollo, Italy

Label on Damilano Langhe Arneis bottle

2011 Damilano Langhe Arneis, Piedmont, Italy       $21

This wine is 100% Arneis, a grape often referred to as “white Barolo” because it is grown close to some of the most famous areas of Barolo and has a similar richness. It is fresh with bright acidity, vibrant peach and passion fruit flavors and an a delightful hint of almond on the finish.  There is a nutty edge, structured with a hint of tannin. On the nose there is a bit of cut grass. This is an un-oaked wine suitable for appetizers, fish courses and white meats. Alcohol: 13%

Tommasi Rompicollo featuredat Bishop's Stock2011 Tommasi Rompicollo, Maremmma, Tuscany, Italy    $15

The 2011 Rompicollo is a 60-40 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its name, roughly translated as “neck-breaking” in English, was inspired by the backbreaking labor required to farm in the Tufo-rich soils of the area. Sweet cherry and blackberry aromas are followed by a mild mouthfeel. There is initial plushness here but the wine’s texture is compact and streamlined overall. This is a great blend for something as simple as gorgonzola  with hearty bread or a tradtional as a lamb shank. It is considered a smart buy receiving a 92 from Wine Spectator. Alcohol: 13%
