Studio Sweep Sale

2011 Studio Sweep Sale

7th Annual Studio Sweep Sale

Each December Bishop’s Stock’s artists clean out their studios to offer art lovers a chance to add to their collections or find the perfect gift at great savings. For the artists this gives a chance to sell older work, the last of a series or paintings that just need to go! For those who appreciate local talent this means a great selection of oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels – large and small. Most work is unframed but there is a small selection of paintings ready to hang plus a few frames to purchase.  The sale continues through December and January so there is plenty of time to leisurely search for that perfect find. During this time newer work by gallery artists is also displayed but not at reduced prices.

2015 E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Blanc, Cotes du Rhone, France                     $14

This blend from Northern Cotes du Rhone is 65% Viognier, 15% Roussanne, 8% Marsanne, 8% Clairette, 2% Bourboulenc, 2% white Grenache.  The full bodied Viognier  and Roussanne carry this blend but the other grapes provide fruit and depth typical in Rhone blends. This is a bright, clear yellow wine with a fresh nose marked by the distinctive aromas of the Viognier – white flowers, apricot, acacia and white peach. The richness and body make this a well-rounded wine with elegance, strength and balance that is an easy aperitif that can carry guests through a holiday menu.

E. Guigal uses 100% Syrah in this full-bodied wine. For the holidays this wine gives guests who prefer red wine a nice option to complement a cocktail buffet or a full dinner. This is a dark red wine that has a nose of red fruits, cherry and strawberry with delicate oak. Due to long oak ageing this red and black fruit rich wine has remarkable freshness and refined tannins. According to Robert Parker, now is the time to uncork this wine and enjoy!

Featured Artist in November – Scot Dolby

img_1104landscape

November is the month Bishop’s Stock celebrates the beginning of a new year on Green Street. It is hard to believe we have been open 13 years and have staged 140 shows and 13 Paint Snow Hill events. Some things have changed. Doug Fisher is our resident artist two days a week and our shelves now stock wine instead of fine craft. What hasn’t changed is the amazing talent we  represent. Our November featured artist has been showing with us from Day 1. Scot Dolby was at that time a favorite teacher for Snow Hill students with many coming to see his work. Fast forward and Scot (and his wife Jean) are retired, enjoying being near their daughters and not being “retiring” at all. Scot’s work is known to fall into two categories – vast landscapes (local and some far away) and fish (a fly fisherman’s dream.) Scot also has a number of collectors of his mixed media paintings on cigar box tops.

Featured Wines for November – 2015 Willm Gewurztraminer Reserve, Alsace, France & 2014 Cloudline Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon

willm-g-label

2015 Willm Gewurztraminer Reserve, Alsace, France   $14

2015 Willm Gewurztraminer Reserve from Alsace, France is the white we are featuring since it is right at home with Thanksgiving’s sage-rubbed turkey and stuffing. “Gewurz” means “spicy” in the language of Alsace and Gewurztraminer wines are characteristically  aromatic, spicy, sometimes off-dry with hints of lychees and nutmeg. The Willm Gewurztraminer is a little more delicate than other Gewurztraminers but it has a rich aromatic palette with an explosion of exotic fruits, flowers, citrus and spices. It has a medium body with a richness that stands up to the mixture of spices and herbs used at Thanksgiving. Alcohol: 13%

2014 Cloudline Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon    $19

2014 Cloudline Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon is our featured red for November. People pretty traditionally serve Pinot Noir at Thanksgiving since it is a lighter bodied red with a soft palate. It is a good match for poultry but deciding what Pinot Noir varietal profile to select may be challenging. Cloudline is produced in the Willamette Valley where a cooler climate produces Pinot Noir grapes that offer a delicacy and transparency unlike California Pinot Noir that gets a deeper richness from a warmer climate. With 2014 Cloudline Pinot Noir you get a stellar year and a good value with a wine that brings forward notes of dark berries, black cherries and crushed red fruits.  The wine has good complexity yet a soft palate. This is a perfect “turkey” wine. Alcohol: 13.5%

Featured Artists in October – Martha Graham & Louise Dusinberre

It is always a pleasure to show how creative talent runs in families. In October the work of Martha Graham and Louise Dusinberre provides the opportunity to see creative connections in one household.  The mother (Martha) was in high school when she  knew she would be an artist. Louise (the daughter) also forged her way into the world of art by selecting the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia for her college training.

Since those defining days Martha and Louise have achieved success in their professional fields (interior design for Martha  and fashion design for Louise) while still using studio work as their creative outlets. Each artist works with different media, but it is easy to see a common thread in their compositions and artistic style.

Our August  show is all about connections and 3 artists who share support for their creative endeavors. Annie Compton, Linda Epstein and Jane Rowe are friends who live in different parts of the country. To encourage and support their art work they created a “digital community” that gave them the opportunity to chose early mornings to paint in their own studios in Maryland and Texas. These painting sessions last a few hours and are dedicated to “morning exercises”, warming up with small studies, experimenting with materials and methods. When they finished painting they would send emails with digital images to share feedback. Joined by mutual commitment, these morning exercises have become a way of staying involved with each others work while shaping creative habits. The result, Connections, a show of the paintings they created
