January Featured Wines – 2013 Domaine du Salvard Cheverny, Loire Valley, France & 2012 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone, Southern Rhone, France
2013 Domaine du Salvard Cheverny, Loire Valley, France $17
2013 Domaine du Salvard Cheverny is imported from the Loire Valley by Kermit Lynch. The Delaille brothers produce this great value in Cheverny Sauvignon Blanc. This is a blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Chardonnay. The Sauvignon Blanc offers zest on the nose and on the palate with the Chardonnay providing roundness and richness on the palate. This is a wine that will not “knock off your socks” but that is exactly what the Delailles intend. They produce and present the best of the terrior just as Old World wines are meant to do. This is a lovely wine as a appertif or an accompaniment to simple roasted fish or poultry.
2012 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone, Beaumes-de-Venise, France $17
2012 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone in produced in the Southern Rhone area of Beaumes-de-Venise. This wine is made by Jean-François Pasturel at Terres d’Avignon. Typical for Cotes du Rhone blends the varietals in the 2012 vintage are Grenache (66%), Syrah (25%), Carignan (7%), Cinsualt (1%) and Mourvedre (1%.) On the nose it shows violet, rose petal, oak, smoke, mushroom, game, toast, tar, dust, dark fruit, vanilla, tobacco, red fruit, spice box, and cedar. On the palate there is lots of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, licorice, anise, vanilla, musk, black currant, blackberry, dust, leather, currant, and blueberry. Again, this is an Old World wine that is not the “star of the show.” It plays a supporting role by complimenting simple bistro food.

December Featured Wines – Toad Hollow Risque French Sparkling Wine, Languedoc, France & 2012 Boneshaker Red Blend, Lodi, California
Toad Hollow Winery Risque French Sparkling Wine, Langue Doc, France $17
The white selection for the month is Toad Hollow’s Risqué French Sparkling Wine. While Toad Hollow is a California producer, they like adding wines not from California to their portfolio. This sparkling wine uses Mauzac grapes from Languedoc, France. It is made with the Methode Ancestrale style which is different from most sparkling wines since there is no second fermentation. The wine is bottled before the first fermentation is completed. This is a softer sparkling wine with less bubbles and just 6% alcohol. It is just slightly sweet with tastes of apricots and pears. Consider this an appetif or an after dinner sipper. Great packaging!
2012 Boneshaker Red Blend, Lodi, California $17
The red selection is a new wine produced by California’s Hahn Family Wines under their Boneshaker label. 2012 Boneshaker Red Blend uses 43% Zinfandel for which they are known but adds 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% petite Sirah to give a rich blend of dark fruit with dark chocolate and espresso. This wine is smooth on the palate and may make you think of blackberry cobbler. As you settle into rich chili for the New Year football games, pull out this wine.

2013 Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose, Portugal $11
This rose has been selected for September as a salute to the last days of summer. This wine is a bright raspberry color. It is made from Espadeiro grapes that are hand picked and immediately crushed to capture fresh aromas. Even with the light fizz characteristic of Vinho Verdes, this wine is smooth and creamy. As with all Vinho Verdes, this wine needs to be enjoyed within 2 years of bottling. That time is now! Try it as an aperitif or with grilled fish or a salad. Alcohol: 11.5%

No rush to enjoy this wine but it is a great pairing for summer’s grilled meats and sausages. Alcohol: 14%
