Our May wines are produced in the Marche region located along the Adriatic coast of Italy, east of Tuscany and Umbria. It is an area of rolling hills and ancient vineyards. After the fall of the Napoleonic Empire this region remained in the hands of the Bonaparte family who developed an agricultural economy organized in three fattorie, or main farms, divided into 110 colonies. The selected wines are produced by Boccadigabbia, one of the colonies tied to the Bonaparte Administration. The Boccadigabbia website provides background on the interesting history of Marche and the estate now owned by the Alessandri family.
Marche is known as a premier source for white wine. The primary grape is Verdicchio. The primary red wines are Rosso Cònero and Rosso Piceno, both made from Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. While we do have Boccadigabbia Verdicchio di Matelica our inventory, our featured white, 2024 Boccadigabbia Ribona Colli Maceratesi DOC, is made from the Ribona grape (also called Maceratino.) This is a very rare grape variety only grown in the Mascerata province of Marche. Verdicchio Marino (Sea Verdicchio) is also another name for the grape. The wine is crisp and full-flavored providing another unique wine for you to explore.
2020 Boccadigabbia Rosso Piceno DOC, our red selection, is a blend of 60% Montepulciano and 40% Sangiovese. This blend makes Rosso Piceno more balanced and versatile than Rosso Conero, the other Marche blend with more Montepulciano and less Sangiovese.
