March Featured Artists – Louise Dusinberre & Erick Sahler

Our reopening exhibit is very exciting. I consider the work of both artists as refections of life on Delmarva. Artists, Louise Dusinberre and Erick Sahler, treasure the uniqueness of simple pleasures we see everyday. Their work is definitely defined as “narrative.” This show will tell their stories.

Louise Dusinberre is the daughter of Martha Graham, a well-known, area artist of many talents, who passed her creative genes on to her daughter. Louise has spent may visits to the area enjoying pleasant weekends and holidays at Cellar House, the family home of Martha and her late husband, Jack Graham, located on the Pocomoke River. Her pastels are inspired by those visits.

Erick Sahler is no stranger to Bishop’s Stock. It has been a pleasure to have his serigraphs and prints available for patrons, many who are visitors to the area. Erick is truly a storyteller. While his prints are so visually well-composed, they also tell a story of a time and place. As he comments, in his travels up and down Delmarva, he has discovered the “icons and institutions” that have influenced his work. This is Erick’s second show with us. His work is not often shown together but we are fortunate to have 22 new prints, created since the pandemic, give us a “tour across the Peninsula.” As Erick says, “this is the first time I myself will see all these pieces collected together in one setting.” Discover Delmarva will be quite a show for all of us.

It is always a pleasure to show how creative talent runs in families. In October the work of Martha Graham and Louise Dusinberre provides the opportunity to see creative connections in one household.  The mother (Martha) was in high school when she  knew she would be an artist. Louise (the daughter) also forged her way into the world of art by selecting the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia for her college training.

Since those defining days Martha and Louise have achieved success in their professional fields (interior design for Martha  and fashion design for Louise) while still using studio work as their creative outlets. Each artist works with different media, but it is easy to see a common thread in their compositions and artistic style.
